The Moscow Underground Gas Storage Department is one of the oldest gas storage facilities in the country and is designed to manage seasonal and daily irregularities in gas consumption and reserve gas supply to consumers of the Moscow Industrial hub.

The territory of the UGS belongs to the suburban area of Moscow. The underground gas storage was created in the Shchelkovo water-saturated structure, an anticline of 6.0×3.0 km with a vertical closure of 22 m along the minus 745 m closing contour line along the roof of the Shchigrovsky horizon sandstones. The storage area is 18 km2. The total volume of gas in the storage is 3.3 billion m3, the active volume is 1.3 billion m3, and the maximum daily gas withdrawal is 13.0 million m3/day.
